Description

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates and we advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children within the Family Court System. A CASA volunteer will advocate for a child or sibling set and will visit with that child/children at least monthly. This is different to a social worker who on average has 30 cases. This allows for the CASA volunteer to really get to know the kids and the family and gather all of the information to make the best decision on behalf of them. CASA volunteers write court reports to the Judge and make recommendations in regards to what is best for that child/children. A CASA staff member supervises and provides support along the way - volunteers are never without guidance. We ask that volunteers commit between 1-2 years as that is the average length of a case. So many people come in and out of these kids' lives, we want to be a constant. Also, on average, our volunteers dedicate around 5-10 hours a month on their cases. It is more towards the beginning of the case and after the first few months it is less intensive. In 2022, there were 464 abused and neglected children who needed a CASA! Child fatalities/near fatalities due to abuse and neglect were up 22% in Kentucky in 2021. To become a CASA volunteer you have to be at least 21 years old, not be a foster parent, allow us to do background checks and attend a one off 30 hour training.
