Who We Are

MISSION The mission of Dancing Well is to restore the well-being of veterans and families affected by PTSD and Brain Injury through community dance. VISION We envision a world where veterans affected by PTSD and BI can heal and thrive, together with their families, loved ones, and the larger community. CORE PRINCIPLES • Every person has value, resilience, and the ability to thrive. • Every person deserves access to the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of dance. • Those with different backgrounds and abilities may need modifications to traditional dance forms, but their ability to enjoy and benefit from dance remains the same. • Excellence in dance facilitation is person centered and grows out of responsible and effective training. HISTORY Developed in dialogue with a staff psychiatrist at Fort Knox in 2010, Dancing Well has been successfully piloted with soldiers there. In 2012 the focus shifted to veterans, their families and loved ones. Since then, Dancing Well has been holding several dance series of ten sessions each per year in Louisville. A recent scientific study found highly significant improvement in wellness of veterans with PTSD through participation in the program.

What We Do

Dancing Well: The Soldier Project brings the healing power of dance, live music, and community to veterans and families affected by PTSD and brain injury. Veterans, loved ones, and volunteers come together in a safe, low-pressure setting to enjoy socializing and fun physical activity. The dancing is based on music and dance forms anyone can enjoy. Important modifications ensure that those with PTSD, brain injury, and other physical and mental challenges can participate fully and benefit. Proven to be effective in reducing the effects of PTSD through empirical evidence, Dancing Well holds several dance series of ten sessions each per year in Louisville. During times of COVID-19 isolation, gatherings are held virtually and connections are maintained through regular phone conversations. A weekly Dance Party is held on Facebook Live with simple dances for home solo participation. Under development is a program to train dance leaders from across the nation to provide similar services in their communities.
