Volunteer: Programs Volunteer

Programs Volunteers have all the fun! Enjoy arts and crafts; watching movies; reading books; playing games; sewing; singing; dancing? Have other unique hobbies you'd love to share? Our programs volunteers do everything from planning and organizing a program to simply showing up and being a patient companion during an event.

We are looking for program volunteers for weekends to provide additional engagement for our patients in the afternoons and evenings. This might include for example: setting up for a movie and popcorn on the unit, games on the unit, or other similar activities.

We have program volunteers who share their talents in unique ways for example we have a mentalist who enjoys Mental Magic performances with patients while another volunteer serves as a puppeteer bringing in his puppets for hilariously, fun shows! The opportunities are abounding, and we'd love to have you join our team!

Volunteer: CASA Volunteer

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates and we advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children within the Family Court System. A CASA volunteer will advocate for a child or sibling set and will visit with that child/children at least monthly. This is different to a social worker who on average has 30 cases. This allows for the CASA volunteer to really get to know the kids and the family and gather all of the information to make the best decision on behalf of them. CASA volunteers write court reports to the Judge and make recommendations in regards to what is best for that child/children. A CASA staff member supervises and provides support along the way - volunteers are never without guidance. We ask that volunteers commit between 1-2 years as that is the average length of a case. So many people come in and out of these kids' lives, we want to be a constant. Also, on average, our volunteers dedicate around 5-10 hours a month on their cases. It is more towards the beginning of the case and after the first few months it is less intensive. In 2022, there were 464 abused and neglected children who needed a CASA! Child fatalities/near fatalities due to abuse and neglect were up 22% in Kentucky in 2021.

Volunteer: Research Assistant

Do you love to find hidden gems, grants, and other resources that can benefit your community? If so, let me introduce you to SPARC Hope. We are a small non-profit that serves single parents who are working, pursuing higher education, and raising their kids. This program is not a handout, but a hand up by providing resources and services to those who are working hard to secure a brighter future for their family.

In order to expand our programs, we need help researching resources, incentives, grants, and other resources that can help our organization and the families we serve.  Some ideas include:

·        Grants– Search for new grants and ways for us to apply.

·        Churches– Donations, free will offering, pantry-drives, volunteers, event notifications, etc.

·        Incentives– Find out how to get our organization in Round-Up fundraising campaignsacross participating stores.

·        Kroger– Find out how to promote the Community Rewards Program in our name.

·        Walmart– Research best ways to partner monthly with Walmart on available funding offered.

·        Amazon Smile – Find out how to promote people choosing SPARC Hope as a recipient for funding dollars.

·        Consignment stores– Research potential opportunities and establish contacts.

Volunteer: Pantry-Drive Host

Looking for a way to volunteer but you just don’t have time, physical capability, or a lot of resources? Do you have a group of friends, family or church members that are looking for ways to support an organization? Let me introduce you to SPARC Hope, we are a nonprofit that supports single working parents that are pursuing higher education. We provide resources and services directly to the parent and their families as they work toward the goal of providing a better and brighter future for their families.

One resource we provide is a pantry where parents can come shop for all their grocery and household needs offering them a savings of $200-600 a month and an overall program benefit of $6600 a year.

Procedure for Hosting a Pantry Drive:

Identify items you want to gather or a theme (Ex: Halloween candy for a Halloween theme). You can get ideas from our Top 10 Needs List posted on our Facebook page or by checking our Standard Needs List on our website under the donations tab. You can also call our office to get the most current needs.  Identify who you want to participate in the drive and solicit your network. This could be your work colleagues, neighbors, friends, family, or anyone you choose. This could even be a project for school-aged kids. Identify a time frame for the drive. Identify a drop-off or pick-up date. Call and let the office know when you would like to either drop off the items or have us pick them up. Office hours are Monday-Thursday from 9-5.

Volunteer: CASA Volunteer

CASA of Midwest Kentucky, Inc.  We serve children in Crittenden, Henderson, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Union and Webster Counties.  We currently need volunteers in all of our 6 communities.

CASA advocates are unique. Unlike lawyers and social workers, who are required to consider the parents’ or family’s interests, the CASA advocate focuses solely on what is best for the child(ren). Quite often throughout the child’s case, the foster parents, social workers, schools, towns, and everything else in the child’s life will change many times due to placement. One of the goals of CASA is to minimize these changes, both by providing continual monitoring and advocacy for the child, and by being a stable and constant person in this child’s life.

CASA advocates are everyday people with a passion for helping children. Our CASA advocates are appointed by judges and trained to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA advocates stay involved with each child until that child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many of these children, the CASA advocate is the one constant adult presence in their lives.

Volunteer: Volunteer Baker

Help us spread love, joy and frosting as a volunteer baker!

For Goodness Cakes works with foster agencies and care homes to match volunteers to bake and deliver birthday cakes to disadvantaged youth and young adults.

We are looking for volunteer bakers to join our Sprinkle Squad of intrepid bakers to help put smiles on a child’s face. The opportunity is flexible around your schedule, whether you can commit to one cake a year or fifty. You don’t have to be a master cake decorator to help out, even a simple cake can make the day sweet!

Check out our website at the link below to take our online orientation and begin baking cakes! This training is mandatory for all volunteers, and there are zero exceptions. You'll learn about how we work, what to expect from your volunteer experience, and all about food safety - because that's our number one priority! When you become a volunteer you'll be baking out of your own home, choosing cakes to bake and deliver around your own schedule, so it's imperative you understand the risks and liabilities.

Keep in mind that you must be at least 18 years old, are able to make deliveries in the County you provide, and you must pass with a 90% or more within two attempts. Baking with us is not a group activity and we ask that you sign up with our organization as an individual.

Volunteer: CASA Volunteers

We need more CASA volunteers willing to speak up for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Kentucky. CASA of Southern Kentucky serves abused and neglected children in the Lincoln, Pulaski, and Rockcastle County Family Court System. We are committed to recruiting, training and supporting community volunteers who have a desire to change a child's story through independent, thorough advocacy.

CASA volunteers complete 30 hours of pre-services training before taking a case from the court. During that training, volunteers will learn what it looks like to advocate for a child's best interest, how to find strengths in families, and how to make first hand recommendations to the court regarding placement, visitation, reunification, permanency, services needed, and so much more.

Once trained and assigned to a case, a CASA volunteer is expected to spend 6-12 hours a month working on their case by meeting with their child and others involved in the child's life (virtual options are encouraged), and attending court. In order to ensure consistency for the children we serve, we ask CASA of Southern Kentucky volunteers to commit to at least one year of service to our program. During that year, you will get to know the children you serve and what life looks like for them. By building a strong, trusted relationship with that child, CASA volunteers are in a unique and vital position to make a positive impact on a child in need of safety and permanency.

*During the COVID-19 pandemic, CASA of Southern Kentucky offers completely virtual training options, allowing many people to become CASA volunteers while remaining safely at home. So many children already live in homes where risks of abuse and neglect are present and have recently been spending all their time in those homes. With fewer outsiders seeing into their lives, the risk to these children is even greater. CASA programs across the state have been working toward preparing for the coming spike in cases when more eyes of teachers, coaches and community members are on our children once again. It is more important than ever that we have CASA volunteers ready to serve in the coming months.

To learn more about CASA of Southern Kentucky and how you can make a difference in the life of an abused or neglected child, visit www.casasky.org. If you ready to submit an application to become a CASA volunteer Apply Now!

Volunteer: Volunteers: Durable Medical Equipment Pick-Up and Delivery

Many people in Kentucky have limited access to appropriate assistive technology (AT) and durable medical equipment (DME), such as wheelchairs, walkers, and bath seats. These individuals may lack health insurance or cannot access their health insurance benefits due to high deductibles.

To improve the health and quality of life for individuals with disabilities in Kentucky, Project CARAT has established an AT/DME reutilization program. The program takes in used donated medical  equipment, refurbishes and sanitizes it, and redistributes it to individuals who need it at no cost to the individual.

We could use your help getting refurbished items to the people who really need it. We need a network of volunteers throughout Kentucky to assist in picking up donations and taking them to refurbish sites and also taking refurbished items to community members in need. Must be able to lift and load. It is helpful to have a vehicle with storage room such as a truck or van.

*Training, background check, and liability waiver required.

COVID has caused us to switch gears. Our offices are closed to the public, so our families can't come to us for their essential needs. We are delivering essentials to their doorstep every week. We are collecting diapers (even already opened packages, especially sizes 5 & 6, and all pull-up sizes), baby wipes, non-perishable food, toiletries and cleaning supplies.

They can contain items for outdoor fun (jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, etc.) and items for boo-boos (neosporin, bandages, sunscreen, etc.)

Volunteer: CASA Volunteers

Life has shut down in many ways during the COVID-19 pandemic, but CASA of Lexington is gearing up for a possible spike in reported cases of child abuse and neglect after restrictions are lifted. We need more CASA volunteers willing to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in central Kentucky.

We have been offering completely virtual trainings during the pandemic, enabling many to become CASA volunteers while remaining healthy at home.

Children who already lived in homes where they were at risk of abuse or neglect are now spending all their time in those homes. In other homes, job losses, tight living spaces and the stress of living through a pandemic increases the risk for abusive or neglectful behavior by caretakers.

People in the homes where abused or neglected children live often are not the ones to report neglect or abuse; it’s often not until more eyes are on a child at school that suspected abuse or neglect can be identified. CASA is working to be prepared for the coming spike in cases when more eyes are on our children again and it will be more important than ever that we have CASA volunteers ready to step into those cases.

CASA of Lexington has launched a COVID-19 response page on its website at casaoflexington.org/covid19, which helps anyone find a way they can help. New CASA volunteers can now sign up to take their initial 30-hour training online, and an application to begin the process is available on the website at casaoflexington.org/advocates.

Once trained and assigned to a case, a CASA volunteer is expected to spend 5-10 hours a month working on their case by meeting with their child and others involved in the child's life, and attending court. We ask our volunteers to commit to at least two years of service, in order to ensure consistency for the children we serve.

During the pandemic, many of our volunteers are staying safe while advocating for children by using video services such as Zoom, or by speaking with children from a driveway while the children are on the porch, for example.

Volunteer: Santa for a Senior Preparation

Since 1927, Family Service Society has been meeting the needs of those in our community year-round. We do so by ensuring residents are assisted with basic necessities such as food, clothing, utility assistance, eyeglasses, prescription medication assistance, and emergency dental care.

In the winter, Family Service Society focuses our efforts on a population that is often forgotten about: Senior and Disabled Adult households. Each year, Family Service Society assists over 300 households through our Santa for a Senior program. This program ensures each household receives food, personal care items, household cleaning items, and gifts for Christmas.

Many times, the seniors we serve tell us that the gifts they receive through this program are the only gifts they will unwrap during this holiday season. If it wasn't for this program, many in our community would not have the ability to partake in a traditional holiday dinner. At Family Service Society, we believe everyone should have food on their plates and a gift under their tree.

You can volunteer with our Santa for a Senior event by helping us pickup food, package gifts, organize donations, and other fun tasks! Your help can be used throughout the entire month of November and December - this is a huge undertaking and an ongoing process. If you want to help our Paducah community enjoy the holidays, this opportunity is calling your name!

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate

You can apply to be a CASA volunteer online at www.CASARiverRegion.org/volunteer

There are 150-200 children in our region at any given time who are on the waiting list for a CASA volunteer advocate to be trained and assigned to their case. These children have experienced abuse and/or neglect, and through no fault of their own, are involved in the family court system. They need someone like you, to be a safe adult and role-model, a friend, an advocate and voice for them in court.

A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a community volunteer-like you-who is interviewed, screened, and trained by our CASA Advocacy staff and then appointed and sworn in by a Family Court Judge to advocate for the best interests of a child who has been abused/ and or neglected and receiving intervention services from The Cabinet of Health and Family Services or 'CPS'. This child is either still in the home with his/her parents and they are experiencing remedial in-home intervention services, or the child has been temporarily removed from his/her home and placed with a family member, a foster parent or in a residential facility.

As a CASA volunteer, you have the opportunity to be a safe adult, a mentor and a trustworthy friend in the life of a child who has been abused and/ or neglected. You will observe the conditions of the child's placement, you will monitor their progress in school or daycare, you will report back to court every few months with an update on the placement and progress of the child's care, and his/her health and education. You will help to ensure that the child's perspective is heard and carefully considered in the court process, and you will help to ensure on a weekly basis, that the child's needs are being met by their parents or temporary guardians.

CASA of the River Region is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency incorporated in November of 1984. CASA is a member of the National CASA Association. Last year, nearly 60,000 CASA volunteers served more than 240,000 abused and neglected children through 954 program offices nationwide. CASA volunteers have helped more than two million abused children since the first CASA program was established in 1977. There are currently 20 CASA program across the state of Kentucky.

Our program serves children in Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Trimble, Shelby and Spencer counties.

Volunteer: Enclosure builders

Outdoor enclosures are a vital part of the rehabilitation process. In outdoor enclosures, our animals learn to be “wild”. They gain strength and balance, practice nest-building, forage around for natural foods, learn to climb, get acclimated to the weather, and are allowed time to be away from humans. Our enclosures always need repair and painting. We currently need to build 5 new large enclosures!!!!!  This can be done on mutually agreed upon days and times. This is great for individuals and groups!

With constant care of the animals, the majority of our volunteer team simply do not have time to step foot outside the medical treatment building. It is important that we keep our 23 acre grounds looking nice for school visits and our community. We have 10 acres to mow weekly. We have about 2 hours of trimming work to do each week. We do have a Zero turn mower.  This is great for individuals and groups!

Volunteer: Animal Care Team

ANIMAL CARE TEAM Each year, we take in hundreds of animals.  These volunteers are required to commit to certain regular days and times each week and it is crucial that these mutually arranged times are kept. Shifts are at 8AM, 12PM, 4PM, and 7PM. Each shift takes an average of 3 hours. Besides our college interns, we do not train anyone unless they can commit to at least six months of regular volunteer hours. We ask that you commit to all training requirements.

Please note that if you are 18 years or older and interested in becoming an Animal Care Team member, there are a few things you should know first:

Besides our education ambassadors, we do not play with nor handle our animals unless necessary. There is always a risk of being bit and some animals’ teeth are very impressive. There is always a risk of disease and parasites. Cleaning cages is a big part of our day. It is far from glamorous. You need to have regular access to email (for communication purposes). You need to be able to regularly go up & down stairs, walk on uneven terrain outside. You need to be able to lift 30 pounds.  You need to have reliable transportation.  You need to show proof of tetanus in the last 10 years. Pre rabies vaccines are HIGHLY recommended.  You will need to read, listen, and follow important instructions yet work independently. You will need to respect and adhere to all safety protocols and risk management initiatives.

Volunteer: Volunteer Videographer

The Somerset-Pulaski County needs someone with the skill to create and edit videos for us!

You don't need to reside in Pulaski or surrounding counties to do this, as it can easily be done remotely.  We think we need a total of 4 brief videos... one is an "About Us" video that could be 1 - 5 minutes long, but this one is the lowest priority.  The next 3 are similar in nature to the one that can be viewed on the Welcome page of our website.  They need to be suitable for a continuous loop, something cute and eyecatching with dog & cats (and maybe kids), or dogs or cats with or without kids.  To keep our website fresh, we will need one with a fall theme, one with a winter theme and one with a summer theme.  (The one we have is rather spring-ish.)

The ideal volunteer for this task would be a professional videographer willing to do some pro-bono work, or a student (possibly looking for a class project?), but we could be happy with a hobbyist too!  We just need something attractive and inspiring that communicates the joy of animals (with or without their humans) throughout the various seasons.

Are you up for this task?  It would be a great addition to any resume, and we certainly are more than willing to give credit where credit is due!  Please contact Lisa Schultz through info@bhumane.org, or call 606-451-2103 if you are interested.
